  • 1 pound ground lean beef or turkey
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cans (6 ounces each) tomato paste
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups ricotta or cottage cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef (or turkey) over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onions and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until onions are softened.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, sugar, basil, and salt. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. In a bowl, combine ricotta (or cottage cheese) with beaten egg.
  6. In a greased baking dish, layer as follows: a third of the meat sauce, half of the noodles, half of the ricotta mixture, a third of mozzarella, and a third of Parmesan. Repeat for a second layer.
  7. Top with the remaining noodles, meat sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 25 minutes or until bubbly and golden.
  9. Allow it to cool for 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
