Hearty & Healthy: Easy Lasagna Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground lean beef or turkey
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 2 cans (6 ounces each) tomato paste
- 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups ricotta or cottage cheese
- 1 egg, beaten
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 12 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef (or turkey) over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add chopped onions and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until onions are softened.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, sugar, basil, and salt. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- In a bowl, combine ricotta (or cottage cheese) with beaten egg.
- In a greased baking dish, layer as follows: a third of the meat sauce, half of the noodles, half of the ricotta mixture, a third of mozzarella, and a third of Parmesan. Repeat for a second layer.
- Top with the remaining noodles, meat sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 25 minutes or until bubbly and golden.
- Allow it to cool for 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
